| Description | The TOP258EN is a highly integrated offline flyback switcher IC from Power Integrations and is part of the TOPSwitch-HX family. The device combines a high-voltage power MOSFET, PWM controller, oscillator, high-voltage startup circuitry, current limiting, and comprehensive protection functions in a single package for efficient AC/DC switch-mode power supply designs. The TOP258EN integrates a 700V high-voltage power MOSFET, allowing direct operation from rectified AC mains. Combining the power switch and control circuitry within one IC reduces external component count, simplifies PCB layout, improves system reliability, and enables compact isolated flyback power supplies. The device is designed for power supplies operating from universal AC mains, typically covering an input range of approximately 85VAC to 265VAC. This enables a single power-supply design to support international mains voltages without requiring manual voltage selection. The TOP258EN provides substantial output-power capability, with achievable power depending on input voltage, transformer design, cooling, enclosure, efficiency, and thermal conditions. Open-frame designs can support approximately 148W with universal AC input and up to approximately 195W with 230VAC input under suitable design conditions. The TOPSwitch-HX architecture supports switching frequencies up to approximately 132kHz, allowing designers to use relatively compact transformers and filtering components. The switching architecture is optimized to maintain high conversion efficiency across varying input voltage and output load conditions. Integrated EcoSmart technology improves efficiency at light load and reduces standby power consumption. Under appropriate application conditions, the TOP258EN can enable very low no-load input power, making it suitable for energy-efficient adapters, auxiliary supplies, consumer electronics, and continuously connected equipment. The device incorporates frequency jittering to spread switching energy across a wider frequency spectrum. This technique reduces peak electromagnetic interference and can simplify the design of external EMI filtering required to meet conducted and radiated emissions standards. A programmable and selectable current-limit function allows the power stage to be optimized for transformer characteristics, output-power requirements, thermal design, and operating conditions. Accurate cycle-by-cycle current limiting also protects the integrated power MOSFET and transformer against excessive primary current. Integrated soft-start functionality controls switching behavior during initial power-up. This reduces electrical stress on the MOSFET, transformer, rectifier diodes, capacitors, and other power-stage components while helping provide controlled converter startup. The TOP258EN includes comprehensive protection functions such as overload protection, output short-circuit protection, output overvoltage protection, open-loop protection, auto-restart operation, current limiting, and hysteretic thermal shutdown. These integrated protection mechanisms reduce external circuitry while improving overall power-supply robustness. The device's auto-restart function limits power delivery during persistent fault conditions. When an overload, short circuit, or other qualifying fault is detected, switching is periodically interrupted and restarted, reducing component stress and average power dissipation until normal operating conditions are restored. Integrated hysteretic thermal shutdown protects the device when junction temperature exceeds the permitted operating level. Switching is disabled during excessive temperature conditions and can resume after the device has cooled sufficiently, providing protection against temporary thermal overloads. The TOP258EN is supplied in the eSIP-7C through-hole package, designed specifically for offline power-conversion applications requiring effective heat transfer and high-voltage isolation. The package supports heatsink attachment and provides appropriate spacing for high-voltage power-supply layouts. The combination of a 700V integrated MOSFET, universal mains capability, high-frequency switching, EcoSmart energy-saving technology, programmable current limiting, frequency jittering, soft start, auto restart, and integrated protection functions makes the TOP258EN a highly integrated solution for medium- and higher-power isolated offline converters.
