| Description | The TOP242PN is a highly integrated offline AC/DC switcher IC from Power Integrations and belongs to the TOPSwitch-GX family. It combines a high-voltage power MOSFET, PWM controller, oscillator, high-voltage startup circuitry, current limiting, and multiple protection functions in a single device for compact and efficient isolated and non-isolated switch-mode power supplies. The TOP242PN integrates a 700V high-voltage power MOSFET, enabling operation directly from rectified AC mains. Integrating the switching MOSFET and control circuitry significantly reduces external component count compared with conventional designs using separate PWM controllers and power transistors. The device is suitable for power supplies operating from universal AC mains, including applications designed around approximately 85VAC to 265VAC input. This enables a single converter design to support common international mains voltages while maintaining regulated DC output through an appropriate transformer and feedback network. The TOP242PN is intended for lower-power members of the TOPSwitch-GX application range. Depending on input voltage, thermal conditions, enclosure, transformer design, efficiency, and cooling, the device can support output power levels up to approximately 22W under suitable open-frame high-line operating conditions, with lower practical power ratings for universal-input or enclosed designs. The TOPSwitch-GX architecture operates with a nominal switching frequency of approximately 132kHz. The relatively high switching frequency allows the use of smaller transformers, inductors, and filtering components, helping reduce the overall size and weight of the finished power supply. Integrated EcoSmart technology improves energy efficiency across varying load conditions and reduces power consumption when the connected equipment is operating at light load or standby. This makes the TOP242PN suitable for continuously powered consumer, industrial, communication, and auxiliary power applications. The TOP242PN incorporates frequency jittering, which modulates the switching frequency over a small range to spread switching energy across the frequency spectrum. This reduces peak EMI emissions and can simplify compliance with conducted and radiated electromagnetic interference requirements. An integrated current-limit function provides cycle-by-cycle protection for the internal MOSFET and transformer primary winding. Current limiting helps protect the power stage during startup, overload, abnormal load conditions, and output faults while also establishing the maximum primary switching current. The device includes an integrated soft-start function that controls switching behavior during converter startup. Soft start reduces electrical stress on the internal MOSFET, transformer, rectifiers, capacitors, and other power components while helping provide controlled establishment of the output voltage. Comprehensive protection features include overload protection, output short-circuit protection, auto-restart operation, current limiting, overtemperature protection, and shutdown functions. These integrated protection mechanisms reduce the number of external components required and improve overall power-supply reliability. The auto-restart function limits average output power during persistent fault conditions. When an overload or short circuit prevents normal regulation, the device periodically disables and restarts switching, significantly reducing component stress and power dissipation until the fault condition is removed. Integrated hysteretic thermal shutdown protects the TOP242PN against excessive junction temperature. Switching is disabled when the thermal protection threshold is reached and resumes after the device has cooled sufficiently, providing automatic protection against abnormal thermal operating conditions. The TOP242PN is supplied in the DIP-8C through-hole package. The package is designed for offline power conversion and provides convenient through-hole PCB assembly, making the device particularly suitable for conventional power-supply boards, industrial equipment, repair applications, and designs where through-hole construction is preferred. The combination of an integrated 700V MOSFET, 132kHz switching architecture, EcoSmart energy-saving technology, frequency jittering, current limiting, soft start, auto restart, and thermal protection allows the TOP242PN to replace numerous discrete power-supply components while providing a compact and reliable offline converter solution. The TOP242PN is widely used in AC/DC adapters, auxiliary power supplies, battery chargers, set-top boxes, communication equipment, industrial control systems, appliance electronics, standby power supplies, consumer electronics, embedded systems, instrumentation, small power converters, isolated flyback converters, and general-purpose offline SMPS applications requiring an integrated high-voltage switching solution. |
