Description The ADIN1110BCPZ-R7 is an ultra-low-power, single-port 10BASE-T1L Single-Pair Ethernet MAC-PHY from Analog Devices, designed specifically for industrial Ethernet applications. By integrating both the Ethernet physical layer and Media Access Control (MAC), the device enables direct Ethernet connectivity to microcontrollers and processors through a simple SPI interface.

The ADIN1110 is compliant with the IEEE 802.3cg-2019 10BASE-T1L standard and supports full-duplex Ethernet communication at 10Mbps over a single balanced pair of conductors. This technology enables standard Ethernet communication to extend directly to field-level sensors, actuators, instruments, and industrial control equipment.

A major advantage of 10BASE-T1L is its exceptional cable reach. The ADIN1110 supports communication distances of up to approximately 1700 meters with supported 1.0Vp-p and 2.4Vp-p signaling, depending on cable characteristics and system implementation.

Unlike a conventional Ethernet PHY that requires a processor with an integrated Ethernet MAC, the ADIN1110 includes its own integrated MAC. This allows designers to add Ethernet connectivity to lower-power and lower-cost microcontrollers that do not contain a dedicated Ethernet MAC peripheral.

Communication between the host processor and the ADIN1110 is provided through a compact 4-wire SPI interface. The SPI interface can operate using the OPEN Alliance 10BASE-T1x MAC-PHY Serial Interface protocol or a generic SPI protocol, providing flexibility for different embedded system architectures.

The integrated MAC includes 16 MAC address filters and high-priority and low-priority packet queues with a combined 28kB buffer. These hardware resources reduce the packet-processing workload placed on the host processor and enable efficient implementation of embedded industrial Ethernet nodes.

The MAC supports both cut-through and store-and-forward operation. This provides flexibility for optimizing packet latency, buffering behavior, and host interaction according to the requirements of the application.

Integrated IEEE 1588 timestamp support enables precise packet timestamping for applications requiring synchronized industrial communication, distributed measurement, coordinated control, event logging, and deterministic network operation.

The ADIN1110 supports programmable 1.0Vp-p and 2.4Vp-p transmit amplitude levels. The lower 1.0Vp-p operating mode is particularly useful for low-power and intrinsic-safety-oriented applications, while the higher 2.4Vp-p level provides additional signaling margin where system requirements permit.

Independent receive and transmit pins together with external termination resistors provide additional flexibility for implementing intrinsically safe Ethernet architectures. These characteristics make the ADIN1110 particularly suitable for process automation and field instrumentation applications.

The device features extremely low power consumption for an industrial Ethernet solution. Typical power consumption can be approximately 42mW in dual-supply operation with 1.0Vp-p signaling, enabling Ethernet connectivity in power-constrained field devices and compact sensor nodes.

The ADIN1110 incorporates comprehensive cable and link diagnostic functions. Integrated Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) functionality enables detection and localization of cable faults, helping identify wiring problems during installation, commissioning, maintenance, and system troubleshooting.

An integrated Link Quality Indicator based on Mean Square Error (MSE) provides information about physical link quality. This functionality can be used for predictive maintenance, cable-condition monitoring, installation verification, and continuous assessment of industrial network performance.

Additional diagnostic capabilities include an integrated frame generator and checker, multiple loopback modes, IEEE test modes, and statistics counters. These features simplify production testing, system commissioning, network diagnostics, and field troubleshooting.

The ADIN1110 includes automatic MDI polarity detection and correction, increasing installation robustness by compensating for reversed pair polarity under supported operating conditions.

The PHY also supports autonegotiation, allowing compatible 10BASE-T1L devices to establish appropriate link operating parameters automatically.

A 25MHz crystal or external clock input can be used as the reference clock source. Integrated clocking and control circuitry simplifies implementation of the complete industrial Ethernet interface.

The ADIN1110 includes integrated voltage supply monitoring and power-on reset (POR) circuitry. These functions improve system-level robustness by ensuring controlled startup and monitoring critical supply conditions during operation.

The device has been designed for demanding industrial electromagnetic environments. With appropriate external protection, termination, PCB layout, and system design, applications can target industrial EMC requirements covering ESD, electrical fast transient, surge, conducted immunity, radiated immunity, and radiated emissions.

The ADIN1110 architecture allows Ethernet to reach industrial field devices that traditionally rely on protocol-specific fieldbus networks. Using a single twisted pair can reduce cable size, connector complexity, installation cost, and wiring requirements while maintaining standard Ethernet-based communication from the field device toward higher network layers.

The B temperature grade of the ADIN1110BCPZ-R7 specifies an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. For systems requiring operation up to +105°C, Analog Devices also provides the corresponding C-grade ADIN1110 versions.

The ADIN1110BCPZ-R7 is supplied in a compact 40-lead LFCSP package with exposed pad. The CP-40-29 package measures approximately 6 × 6 × 0.75mm, allowing the complete MAC-PHY to be integrated into space-constrained field instruments and industrial sensor designs.

The exposed pad assists with grounding and thermal performance and should be connected according to the recommended PCB layout guidelines. Proper MDI routing, termination, decoupling, grounding, protection, and reference-clock layout are important for obtaining optimum signal integrity and EMC performance.

The R7 ordering suffix identifies the tape-and-reel version. The ADIN1110BCPZ-R7 is supplied on a reel containing 750 devices, making it suitable for automated SMT production and high-volume industrial equipment manufacturing.

The combination of IEEE 802.3cg-2019 10BASE-T1L compliance, integrated Ethernet MAC, 10Mbps full-duplex Single-Pair Ethernet, up to 1700m cable reach, 4-wire SPI host interface, OPEN Alliance protocol support, 28kB packet buffering, IEEE 1588 timestamping, integrated TDR diagnostics, low 42mW power consumption, and compact 6 × 6mm packaging makes the ADIN1110BCPZ-R7 an effective solution for bringing Ethernet directly to low-power industrial field devices.

The ADIN1110BCPZ-R7 is widely used in process automation, factory automation, field instruments, industrial IoT equipment, building automation, fire safety systems, edge sensors, smart sensors, actuators, condition monitoring systems, machine connectivity, remote I/O modules, industrial controllers, instrumentation, Ethernet-APL related equipment, long-reach industrial Ethernet networks, and Single-Pair Ethernet infrastructure.
