Description The TPS2592AADRCR is a highly integrated 12V electronic fuse (eFuse) and power-path protection IC from Texas Instruments. Designed to protect electronic systems against overloads, short circuits, input voltage surges, excessive inrush current, and reverse current conditions, the device combines a low-resistance power MOSFET with advanced protection and control circuitry in a compact 3 × 3mm VSON package.

The TPS2592AADRCR belongs to the TPS2592Ax family of integrated eFuse protection devices. It is particularly suitable for protecting 12V power distribution systems, solid-state drives, storage equipment, communication electronics, industrial controllers, and other applications requiring controlled power delivery and fault protection.

The device supports a normal operating input voltage range of 4.5V to 13.8V, with an absolute maximum input voltage rating of 20V. This operating range makes it suitable for nominal 12V power rails and other compatible low-voltage DC power systems.

The TPS2592AADRCR integrates a high-performance 28mΩ typical on-resistance power MOSFET. The low-resistance internal switch minimizes conduction losses and voltage drop during normal operation, improving power distribution efficiency compared with protection solutions using higher-resistance series switching devices.

A major feature of the TPS2592AADRCR is its adjustable current-limit function. The current limit can be programmed from approximately 2A to 3.7A using a single external resistor connected to the ILIM pin. This allows designers to configure the protection threshold according to the expected load current and system requirements.

The current-limit function provides approximately ±15% accuracy under specified operating conditions. Accurate current limiting helps protect downstream components, PCB traces, connectors, and power distribution circuits from excessive current during overload and fault conditions.

During an overload or short-circuit event, the internal protection circuitry limits the current flowing through the integrated MOSFET. This controlled current response helps prevent excessive stress on the upstream power source and connected electronic components.

The device incorporates a fixed 15V overvoltage clamp. When the input voltage rises above the normal operating range, the integrated overvoltage protection circuitry controls the internal pass MOSFET to limit the output voltage, subject to the device's electrical and thermal operating limits.

This overvoltage-clamping capability provides protection against moderate supply transients and voltage disturbances without requiring an additional external overvoltage detection circuit. The 15V clamp is particularly useful in 12V systems where downstream components must be protected from excessive input voltage.

The TPS2592AADRCR provides programmable output voltage slew-rate control through the dV/dT pin. By connecting an external capacitor, designers can control the output voltage rise time during startup and reduce the inrush current associated with charging large downstream capacitors.

Controlled startup is especially important in applications containing substantial input or output capacitance, such as storage devices, embedded computing platforms, and communication equipment. Limiting the initial charging current helps prevent upstream supply disturbances and unwanted voltage drops.

The device includes a programmable undervoltage lockout and enable input (EN/UVLO). External resistors can establish the minimum input voltage required for operation, allowing the protected load to remain disconnected until the supply reaches an acceptable level.

The EN/UVLO function also supports controlled power sequencing and system-level power management. A host controller can use this input to enable or disable the protected power path according to operating requirements.

An important feature of the TPS2592Ax architecture is its external reverse-current blocking MOSFET control. The device includes a dedicated BFET gate-drive output that can control an external N-channel MOSFET connected in a back-to-back configuration with the integrated power switch.

When the external blocking MOSFET is installed, the circuit can prevent current from flowing backward from the load toward the input supply. This is particularly useful in systems containing large hold-up capacitors, backup energy storage, or power rails that may collapse or become short-circuited.

The external blocking MOSFET prevents stored energy on the output side from discharging back into a failing input power bus. This feature is especially valuable in solid-state drives (SSDs), storage equipment, redundant power systems, and hot-plug power distribution circuits.

Reverse-current blocking requires the appropriate external MOSFET and circuit configuration. The integrated eFuse MOSFET alone should not be considered a complete reverse-current blocking solution because of its intrinsic body-diode conduction path.

The TPS2592AADRCR includes an analog current-monitoring function that allows system electronics to monitor the current flowing through the protected power path. This functionality can be used for load monitoring, fault diagnostics, power management, and system health supervision.

The integrated current-monitoring capability can simplify system design by reducing the need for separate current-sensing circuitry in applications where the available monitoring accuracy and interface characteristics meet the system requirements.

The device incorporates thermal shutdown protection to prevent excessive junction temperature during abnormal operating conditions. If the internal temperature reaches the thermal protection threshold, the eFuse disables the power path to reduce power dissipation.

The typical thermal shutdown threshold is approximately 160°C, with approximately 10°C of thermal hysteresis. This protection helps prevent permanent damage during sustained overloads, short circuits, or excessive power dissipation.

The TPS2592AA variant provides an automatic retry fault-response mechanism. Following a thermal fault, the device attempts to restore operation after the appropriate recovery conditions are satisfied. This distinguishes the TPS2592AA from the TPS2592AL variant, which uses a latched thermal fault response.

The automatic retry architecture is useful in applications where temporary fault conditions may clear without requiring manual intervention or an external reset. System designers should consider the resulting retry behavior when evaluating load protection and fault-recovery requirements.

The TPS2592AADRCR has a typical quiescent supply current of approximately 5.8mA during normal operation. Its integrated protection functions reduce the number of external components required compared with discrete MOSFET, current-sensing, and protection-controller solutions.

The device is specified for an operating junction temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, supporting use in industrial electronics, storage equipment, communication systems, and other applications requiring reliable operation across a wide temperature range.

The TPS2592AA family is UL 2367 recognized under the manufacturer's specified operating and external-component conditions. The device has also been evaluated for single-point-failure safety considerations associated with UL 60950 applications.

The TPS2592AADRCR is particularly suitable for hot-plug and hot-swap power applications. Its programmable startup behavior, current limiting, and integrated MOSFET allow loads to be connected to an energized power bus while reducing uncontrolled inrush current and providing protection against abnormal load conditions.

In solid-state drive and storage applications, the device can protect the incoming 12V power rail against excessive current and supply disturbances. The optional external blocking MOSFET also helps prevent output hold-up capacitors from discharging backward into a collapsing input supply.

The device is also useful in industrial power distribution systems, where individual circuit boards or electronic modules require local protection against overloads, short circuits, and supply transients. Its compact architecture enables protected power inputs without a large discrete protection circuit.

The TPS2592AADRCR is housed in a compact 10-pin VSON surface-mount package, identified by Texas Instruments package code DRC. The package measures approximately 3.0 × 3.0mm and occupies only 9mm2 of PCB area.

The package incorporates an exposed thermal pad to improve heat transfer from the integrated power MOSFET into the PCB. Proper thermal pad connection, copper area, power-trace dimensions, and PCB layout are essential for achieving reliable current-handling capability and thermal performance.

The R ordering suffix identifies the large tape-and-reel packaging configuration. The TPS2592AADRCR is supplied in a standard manufacturer package quantity of 3000 devices per reel, making it suitable for automated SMT assembly and high-volume electronics manufacturing.

The TPS2592AADRCR is RoHS and REACH compliant and uses a lead-free NiPdAu terminal finish. The manufacturer currently specifies a moisture sensitivity classification of MSL 1 with a maximum peak reflow temperature of 260°C.

The TPS2592AADRCR is classified by Texas Instruments as Not Recommended for New Designs (NRND). The device remains relevant for existing products and maintenance applications. For new designs, Texas Instruments recommends evaluating newer alternatives such as the TPS259240 family, which provides an extended programmable current-limit range and updated functionality.

The combination of 4.5V to 13.8V operation, integrated 28mΩ power MOSFET, adjustable 2A to 3.7A current limit, fixed 15V overvoltage clamp, programmable output slew rate, adjustable undervoltage lockout, analog current monitoring, external reverse-current blocking FET control, automatic retry fault recovery, and integrated thermal shutdown makes the TPS2592AADRCR a comprehensive solution for protecting 12V power distribution systems.

The TPS2592AADRCR is widely used in solid-state drives, storage systems, server equipment, industrial power supplies, 12V power distribution networks, hot-swap modules, hot-plug electronic systems, communication equipment, embedded computing platforms, industrial controllers, network equipment, power management circuits, redundant power systems, data storage electronics, and general-purpose electronic fuse and power-path protection applications.
