| Description | The PCF8574ADWR is an 8-bit I/O expander IC developed by Texas Instruments, designed to extend the number of digital input/output pins of microcontrollers via the I2C (two-wire) interface. It is widely used in embedded systems where GPIO resources are limited. The device features 8 quasi-bidirectional I/O ports (P0–P7), each of which can function as either input or output without requiring a direction control register. This simplifies firmware design and reduces system complexity. Operating within a supply voltage range of 2.5V to 6V, the PCF8574ADWR is compatible with a wide range of microcontrollers and logic systems. It supports standard I2C communication up to 100 kHz, enabling reliable and efficient data exchange. The IC includes an open-drain interrupt (INT) output, which allows the device to notify the host microcontroller when input states change—eliminating the need for continuous polling and improving system efficiency. Each output pin is latched and capable of driving LEDs directly, making the device suitable for display and indicator applications. Additionally, three hardware address pins (A0–A2) allow multiple devices (up to 8 or more) to be connected on the same I2C bus for expanded I/O capability. With low power consumption (µA-level standby current) and a compact SOIC-16 package, the PCF8574ADWR is ideal for space-constrained and low-power designs. It is widely used in applications such as LCD interfaces (I2C LCD modules), keypad scanning, LED control, industrial automation, IoT devices, and microcontroller-based systems, where expanding digital I/O capability is required. |
